Open Trench Installation Method
Trenching is accomplished with specialized trenching tractors which cut the trench and remove the soil in a single
action. A trench can be used to place multiple conduits over long or short distances. The construction equipment
manufacturer specifies detailed equipment operation and excavation procedures.
Excavate the trench to the desired depth. Remove all rocks and large stones from the bottom of the trench to prevent
damage to the conduit in very rocky soil. Push some clean fill into the trench to cushion the conduit.
Supplemental trenches should be made to all offset enclosure locations. Trench intersections should be excavated to
provide adequate space to make sweeping bends in the conduit.
Digging the Trench
The trench should be as
straight, level and as rock
free as possible. Avoid curves
smaller than the conduit bend
radius. Undercut inside corners
to increase the radius of the
bend. Should there be a rapid
grade change, use backfill to
support the conduit.
