5- To complete the adaptive map merge select Main Fuel Adaptive Map Merge from the Options menu. A warning will come up notifying you
this will modify the fuel tables in the ECM. Select Yes to continue. ProTune II will automatically complete the map merge process and save the
new maps to the ECM.
6- After completing the map merge observe front and rear cylinder trim maps by selecting Front or Rear from the top row of icons in ProTune
II. These maps will now have a more rough appearance and can be smoothed out by using the average function. To use the average function,
select the area of the map that is rough and then select Average Selected Area from the Edit menu. Also at this time any values that were
previously set to -100% can be reset to -100%. When complete save the map to the ECM by selecting the Saveg icon from the row of icons in
ProTune II. In the new window that opens the ECM will be selected by default. Select OK to save the map to the ECM.
NOTE: If adaptive maps or cylinder trim tables produce large spikes in values with large changes in values of the numbers around them, it is possible that
the closed loop system is not operating correctly in that area of the map. This could be due to a cracked exhaust pipe or bad exhaust manifold seal. It can
also be caused by reversion in the exhaust pipe at the sensor location. This is more common with very short open pipes or an open 2-into-1 system and
typically happens at light load. If this occurs closed loop can be deactivated in these areas where the problem is occurring. Select the Target Closed-Loop
Fuel Map from the View menu in ProTune II. This map sets the operation of the closed-loop fuel system at each throttle and RPM site. To deactivate closed
loop go to the area of the map where the issue is occurring and from the drop down menu select NO CL.
Stepper Motor Calibration
If issues with the engine idle hanging high or engine stalling occurs when returning to idle, the Stepper Motor Calibration may need to be adjusted.
Engine idle RPM is controlled by a stepper motor that controls the amount of air flow to the engine during idle conditions. During idle operation, the
stepper will move in an increasing number of steps to raise engine RPM and will reduce the number of steps to slow the idle speed.
The process of calibrating the stepper motor involves adjusting the stepper position with temperature map so it more closely matches the values
used during idle control. Use the following steps to complete the stepper motor calibration:
See ProTune II manual or help files installed with the software for additional information on the functions referenced in this section.
1- Allow motorcycle to cool completely. Engine must be at room temperature before starting this procedure.
2- Connect a PC to the ECM, open Pro Tune II on the PC, and set the ignition switch and kill switch to run. Do not start the motorcycle at this
time. The bar in the lower right corner of Pro Tune II should turn green to show it is communicating with the ECM. If communication is not
established see the basic trouble shooting section of these instructions.
3- Under the View menu in Pro Tune II select Stepper Position with Temperature Map. In the window that opens select the ECM (default) and
hit OK. This will open the stepper position with engine temperature map from the ECM. This map will show the number of step the stepper
motor is open versus the temperature of the engine. Take note of the temperatures intervals on the map.
4- From the top row of icon in Pro Tune II select the Gauge icon. This will open the Gauge panel showing the current engine operation. Identify
the panels for Engine Temperature and Stepper Position on the Gauge panel.
5- Start the engine and allow it to idle. As it warms up take note of the average Stepper Position shown in the Gauge panel at each engine
temperature corresponding to a point on the stepper position with engine temperature map up to 250° F engine temp.
6- Input the values recorded above into Stepper Position with Engine Temperature map in Pro Tune II. For engine temperatures outside of the
area tested carry out the trend of the graph to smooth it out.
7- To save the tuned map to the ECM select Saveg from the top row of icons in Pro Tune II. In the new window that opens select the ECM (default)
and hit OK.
8- Reset the learned idle by selecting Reset Adaptive Maps under the Options menu. This will clear previous learned idle settings based on the
old map.
Starting
This section contains recommendations for correcting poor starting behavior. Before proceeding with recommendations listed in this section,
perform system checks listed in the No Start/Run Condition section.
See ProTune II manual or help files installed with the software for additional information on the functions referenced in this section.
1- If the engine cranks slow and/or kicks back against the starter during cranking.
a- Reduce the values in the Stepper Pre-Start Position Map under the View menu of ProTune II by increments of 10 until cranking speed
improves. If this makes no improvements, perform the other checks listed below.
NOTE: In the lower, left corner of the Stepper Pre-Start Position Map is a check box labeled Use this Table During Cranking. This box must be checked
in order for changes to the map to take effect.
b- Check to verify starter power and ground connections are clean and secure.
c- If engine is equipped with compression releases, be sure that they are operating properly.
d- Verify starting system is in good condition. Excessive ring gear run-out and poor starter clutch condition can, at first, appear to be a control
system problem. These issues must be corrected in order for the system to work properly. A simple test is to remove the fuel pump fuse and
crank the engine over a few times to determine the condition of the starting system.
