SPECIAL NOTE:
The components packaged in this kit have been assembled and machined for specific type of conversions. Modifications to any of the components will
void any possible warranty or return privileges. If you do not fully understand modifications or changes that will be required to complete your conversion, we strongly recommend
that you contact our sales department for more information. This instruction sheet is only to be used for the assembly of Advance Adapter components. We recommend that
a service manual pertaining to your vehicle be obtained for specific torque values, wiring diagrams and other related equipment. These manuals are normally available at automotive
dealerships and parts stores.
JEEP T176 TOP LOADER 4 SPEED:
The Jeep Top Loader transmission that is compatible with the our kits must have a case length of 10-1/4" and the material
must be aluminum. The casting part numbers should be 2604203. The gear shift cover is mounted on top of the case
with 10 bolts and is also made of aluminum.
When assembling the Advance Adapters new main shaft with the original gears, make sure that all of the gears have
sufficient end play for proper lubrication. This should be done while assembling the gears and after assembly to the transfer
case. If the shaft that you have received with the kit does not compare to your original shaft, it is very possible that you
may have received or purchased the wrong adapter kit.
This kit is designed for the Jeep T176 "Top Loader" 4 speed for installation into Jeep & Scout Dana 20 transfer cases, 1945
to 1979. The overall length of the new transmission will probably require driveshaft modifications.
A new main shaft is supplied with this kit for use with your new 4 speed transmission. Complete disassembly of the
transmission must be performed and if unfamiliar with this transmission, a competent mechanic should perform this
operation.
Once the new main shaft has been installed and the adapter housing has been assembled with the appropriate gasket in place,
you must then slide the special bushing into position as illustrated.
Make sure that you install the correct bearing retainer and rear bearing in the back of the new Advance Adapter plate.
See information below for large hole or small hole transfer cases.
The T176 transmission will need to have the upper driver's side hole elongated for use with the new transfer case and adapter
housing. This can be performed with a small rattail file and you can use the adapter plate as a guide in determining the
necessary modifications.
LARGE HOLE TRANSFER CASE/DANA 20:
When using this adapter with the large hole transfer cases, you must use the Jeep T86 bearing retainer. This retainer will
provide the necessary alignment between the new adapter plate and the transfer case. The adapter plate with the retainer
will need to be bolted to the face of the transfer case so that the socket head cap screw can be installed. The transmission
with the new main shaft can now be assembled to the adapter plate. The output gear will need to be installed from the
backside of the Dana 20 transfer case. This will require the driveshaft to be removed while installing the gear. Be sure
to use the 2 spacers so that proper gear alignment is maintained. Maximum torque on output nut should be 75 ft./lbs. The
T86 bearing retainer
WILL NOT REQUIRE
a bearing inside of it.
