Small apertures (high f-numbers) increase depth of field (see
page 117), bringing both foreground and background into
focus. Large apertures (low f-numbers) soften background
details in portraits or other compositions that emphasize the
main subject.
Aperture can be locked at the selected setting (see page 128).

Non-CPU Lenses
If the maximum aperture of the lens has been
specified using the [Non-CPU lens data] item in
setup menu (pg. 220) when a non-CPU lens is
attached, the current f-number will be
displayed in the viewfinder and top control
panel, rounded to the nearest full stop.
Otherwise the aperture displays will show only
the number of stops (F, with maximum
aperture displayed as F
A) and the f-number
must be read from the lens aperture ring.
