Let the Wizard run until values stabilize, then collect samples
15
When values appear stable, select
Accept.
Save the data file under a different name than the template file.
The default file name is the Project name, Site name, Well I.D.,
and date, but you can rename it any way you like.
In the office: copy .flo files back to desktop PC
16
Connect the computers in ActiveSync, and the Win-Situ Sync utility will automatically copy the
resultant .FLO files back to the PC. This time, be sure to select the option “Transfer data files
from Field Unit to Desktop”.
In the office: Launch the Flow-Sense Wizard
7
Tap the Wizard, tap
Start.
TIP: Low-flow setup
can optionally be
done on the
RuggedReader. To reduce
the need for input on a PDA
in the field, prepare a
template on your office PC
in advance, as described
here.
In the office: Enter values & save field template files
8
For each well, execute the Wizard and enter site information. Estimate tubing length, pumping
rate, and final drawdown. Let stabilization phase run for at least one reading, then click
Accept.
When the Wizard asks if you want to save the file, give each one a meaningful name, for
example: “Well ABC template.flo”
In the office: Copy template files
9
to the RuggedReader
Connect the computers in ActiveSync. The
In-Situ synchronization utility, Win-Situ Sync,
will prompt you for Low Flow templates you
wish to transfer to the RuggedReader.
TIP: If Win-Situ Sync does not launch
automatically, select it from the In-Situ
group in Programs on the Windows Start
Menu. Be sure the option “Transfer data files from
Desktop to Field Unit” is checked . Click
to transfer files.
In the field: Prepare the flow cell
10
Select the NPT barbed fitting for the tubing to be used (
3
/
8
” or ½”). Tape the
NPT threads with plumbing tape. Screw into base (inflow) and top (outflow)
of flow cell. Tighten by hand or with a wrench. Do not overtighten. 3-way
valve at inflow and anti-siphon valve at outflow are optional. Attach tubing
and secure with clamps. Attach flow cell to spike or base plate. Insert the
calibrated TROLL 9500 into the flow cell.
Start the pump
11
Turn on the pump and determine the optimum final pumping rate and final
stabilized drawdown from static water level.
Connect the TROLL 9500 to the RuggedReader
12
Launch Pocket-Situ 4 but do not “Find” the device
Launch the Flow-Sense Wizard on the RuggedReader
13
In Pocket-Situ, navigate to the Flow-Sense
a.
Wizard/Flow-Sense Data branch of the tree
and select the template file for the well you
are sampling.
Tap
b.
Start. Values from the highlighted file
will be used to initialize the Wizard.
TIP: When prompted in the Wizard, verify that the
Pocket-Situ unit settings are the same as those on
your desktop PC. We recommend milligrams per
liter for D.O. (stabilizes faster than micrograms
per liter).
Supply final pumping rate and stabilized
14
drawdown
Include any other variables that are not in the
a.
template file—tubing length, sampling rate, etc.
Enter or verify stabilization ranges—you can use
b.
units or percentages—then click
Start.

Guidelines & Precautions
Batteries—If shipping the TROLL 9500 or RuggedReader, remove the batteries first.
•
Ship the RuggedReader battery in separate, marked plastic bag.
Keep the
•
pH/ORP sensor hydrated between uses and during transport. Be sure to
remove the hydration bottle before calibrating or using the sensor.
The
•
RDO sensor requires very little maintenance. Clean the body with a brush &
clean water. Gently wipe the sensing foil with a damp cloth.
For heavy fouling, follow the cleaning procedure described in the RDO chapter of
•
the TROLL 9500 Operator’s Manual.
Air bubbles are unavoidable in low-flow sampling. Because of this, expect a
•
somewhat longer stabilization time for the RDO sensor than for other sensors.

The report will open in an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet includes brief instructions for
using a custom Excel output report template installed with Win-Situ. The template is named
InSituLowFlow.xlt. If Excel does not display it in the default folder, look for it in the Templates
directory of the Microsoft operating system.
