MOniTOr DescripTiOn
The RTM644lnc is a clearance measurement station
consisting of a measurement chamber with motor-
operated swing door(s) and chain conveyor. Materi-
als are checked for gamma radiation in the shielded
measurement chamber. The conveyor system is
used as a carrier for the measurement material. The
evaluation and display of measurements is carried
out by a measurement PC with a real-time operat-
ing system. A PLC is used for the control of the door
as well as of the chain conveyors. The control of the
motors and the signals is realized in dependence to
the inputs from motors and switches on end points.
Layout of the 24 Detectors
The measurement chamber features an array of 24
detectors arranged in a 4π geometry. All detectors
are covered in a robust aluminium housing with their
high voltages and discriminator thresholds controlled
by the computer operating
system
measurement philosophy
release strategy and task
Release management allows the recycling of material
(such as machine parts, concrete rubble, cables,
tubing, metal sheets or insulator material). Hereby the
role of clearance measurement stations (CMS) is to
confirm the adherence to clearance criteria for large
quantities of materials.
Job definition fundamentals
It is the responsibility of the regulator in cooperation
with the industry to develop accepted release criteria
depending on the release path and the intended
destination. Clearance measurement provides
confirmation regarding the contamination or activity
of a measured material in the required nuclide
specific limits.
Clearance measurement principle
The correct operation of a clearance measurement
station is based on calibration. Thereby activities in
the measurement material matrix are related to the
measurement response of the system. The shielding
effects and the shape (geometry) of a measurement
item has to be taken into account. The importance
of this subject increases if large masses are to be
handled.
Consideration of all nuclides with their limits, even if
the CMS is capable to measure gamma nuclides only,
is also an important feature of any CMS.
raDos Cms brief (rtm644lnc)
The RTM644lnc measurement system operates
geometry-oriented. That means the user selects a
measurement object and its filling level. Depending
on this geometry and the weight (provided by
an integrated scale), the RTM644lnc selects the
appropriate calibration for measurement. Material
type and disposal target have to be selected by the
user.
The performance of the RTM644lnc can be
configured to serve customer specific disposal
pathway requirements.
A link-up to a customer specific material control
system is possible.
