INTRODUCTION
This Users Guide provides basic guidance for the preparation and use of
Casella CEL air sampling equipment.
The information contained in this book relates to the operation of
Casella CEL sampling equipment only. It is not intended to advise or
influence adopted sampling strategy. Selection of the correct sampling head
and flow rate should be dictated by local legislation and guidelines. These are
typically issued by the relevant national health and safety organisations.
In the UK, many of the Total Inhalable and Respirable dust
sampling techniques are detailed within the Health and Safety Executives
publication MDHS 14/3 and BSEN 481. Other countries will have alternative
applicable standards.
Casella Training are able to offer a wide range of training courses as
are Casella Analytic able to provide a range of analysis and analytical services
specifically suited to users of air sampling equipment. Please contact Casella
CEL Sales Department for further information.
Occupational particulate monitoring is divided into two main size
fractions, Total Inhalable and Respirable.
1.1
Total Inhalable Sampling Heads
Total Inhalable dust is the fraction of airborne material drawn into the mouth
and nose during breathing, and therefore can be deposited anywhere in the
respiratory tract. This fraction has been defined by the European standards
organisation (CEN) and the international standards organisation (ISO) as
Inhalable. Casella CEL offers the following sampling heads for monitoring
of inhalable particulate.
I.O.M. (Institute of Occupational Medicine),
Total inhalable sampler - Seven-hole head,
Conical inhalable sampler - 37 mm,
Open faced filter holder 37 mm and 25 mm,
Head for lead sampling,
Welding fume head,
Asbestos head with cowl.
1.2
Respirable Sampling Heads
The internationally recognised D50 cut for respirable particulate monitoring is
4.25µm. The Respirable fraction represents particulate matter with the
largest potential to reach the gas exchange region of the lung.
For measurement of the respirable fraction, a size selective head
such as the Dewell Higgins cyclone is required.
1.3
Gas and Vapour Monitoring
Casella CEL is also able to supply heads, sampling tubes, gas sampling bags
and impingers, for monitoring gases and vapours at a personnel exposure
hazard level. Gas sampling bags can be supplied in a range of sizes with
capacities between 1 and 25 litres.
