The Performance Quotient rocker arm kit purchased is for use with flat tappet hydraulic lifter and hydraulic
roller tappet equipped engines only. Make certain to follow the instructions step-by-step to assure
professional results. You must have the proper lifter preload for maximum performance. We highly
recommend that you read these directions thoroughly and completely before you start the installation. Have a
service manual available for ready reference for your particular vehicle before you begin the work.
1.
Remove accessory brackets and the valve covers. Remove all stock rocker arms, as none will be reused.
2.
Clean the threaded rocker arm hold-down bolt holes and cylinder head surface where the new pedestals
will be affixed.
3.
Remove the pushrods. Clean and reinstall; making certain that each pushrod is in the lifter seat. As you
install each rocker arm, confirm that each pushrod is seated in the lifter and use a squirt can with
engine oil to refill the pushrods. Complete this task one at a time, to assure immediate lubrication of the
rocker arm before startup.

Working with one cylinder at a time, turn the engine by hand, watching the pushrods. Follow the engine
firing sequence, recognizing when each pushrod is at its at their lowest point. When the pushrods
appear to be at a near equal height; when the base circle of the exhaust or intake is at its lowest point,
you are in the correct position to install the rocker arms for that cylinder. Following the engine firing
sequence will reduce the need to rotate the engine several times to confirm near top-dead-center of the
compression stroke.

Install one rocker arm at a time by inserting the 5/16” bolt through the top of the rocker arm. MAKE
CERTAIN THAT THE FLAT SIDE OF THE FULCRUM IS FACING THE BOLT HEAD. Loosen each valve lash
adjuster nut (VLLN) and back-off each adjuster so there will be plenty of play between the pushrod and
the adjuster. Slide the pedestal onto the bolt with the curved area of the pedestal in contact the
rounded side of the fulcrum. Next, install the assembly and loosely thread the bolt into the cylinder
head, while making sure that the pedestal is in the channel and the curved “saddle” is in the correct
location on the fulcrum. Slowly torque the bolt to 18-20 ft/lbs.

To check and adjust the lifter preload, turn the valve lash adjuster with an allen wrench by hand
until there is no clearance between the front roller and valve stem; and the pushrod is seated in the
rocker arm adjuster pushrod seat. That is “zero lash”. Turn the adjuster an additional one-half turn to
“preload” the lifter. This will give you the correct lifter preload of .020” to .060”. Repeat this process
on the remaining cylinders; making sure that each rocker arm is properly seated, torqued into position,
and with confirmed rocker arm geometry and adjustment.
7.
To obtain the property rocker arm geometry, you may need to install shorter or longer pushrods.
Pushrods are available in different lengths, specifically for this purpose. Use a pushrod length
checker to measure and confirm proper pushrod length. Many times, modifications that may
have been made to the engine which will change the pushrod length required, such as a valve job,
