C, STARTER ROPE
• Replace a broken starter rope or a rope that
is badly frayed.
NOTE: A recoil spring lies beneath the pulley and
is under tension. If the recoil spring is dis
turbed, considerable time and effort will be
requir^ to reinstall. For this reason you may
want to let a qualified service dealer handle this re
pair. If you try to repair the starter rope and there-
coil spring pops out, take the unit to your dealer.
A WARNING
Always wear ey<^rotection when servicing the
starter
rope.
The
recoil
spring
beneath
the
pulley is tinder tension. If the springpops out, se-
rious щ|цгу can result.

1. Remove the four screws shown in Figure 34 ,
one of which is underneath the rear handle.
Then, remove the screw located on the rear of
the engine housing below the STAET/STOP
switch.
2. Separate the pulley housing jEiom the imit; then,
disconnect the switch wire connected to the
START/STGP switch.
3- If the starter rope is not broken, release the
spring tension by pulling out (inside the pulley
housing) about 10 mches of rope from the pulley
and catch the rope in the notch. Figure 35 .
4. Turn the pulley counterclockwise until the
spring tension is released.
5. Remove the rope retention screw. Figure 36.
6. Remove any remaining rope.
7. Move away from the fuel tank and melt both
ends of the new rope.
8. Allow each melted end to drip once. Then, while
the rope is still hot, pull each melted end
througn a rag to obtain smooth, pointed ends.
9. Feed the rope through the hole in the starter
rope handle. Secure the ixme with a knot, leav
ing about a 3/16” pigtail. Figure 35 .
10. Feed the rope through the roimd starter rope
hole in the pulley housing. Figure 35 .
11. Guide the rope inside the pulley, then up
throu^ the pulley hole. Figure 36.
12. Wrap rope cotmterclockwise around the pulley
ratchet and tuck loose end back under rope,
leaving a 1 inch tail between the retainer rib and
screw post. Figure 36. Pull rope tightly
13. Secure the rope by reinstalling the rope
retention screw; tighten securely.
14. P4dl out (inside the pulley housing) 10 inches of
rope and catch the rope in the notch in the
pulley. Figure 35.
15. Turn tile pulley 6 complete turns clockwise
winding up the spring.

16. Hold the pulley and pull the starter rope to the
full extent. Release the pulley and let the rope
rewind slowly.
17. Reconnect the switch wire to the START/STOP
switch.

WARNING
K the Start/Stop switch wire is not reconnected,
the unit will continue to run with the switch in
the off position._________________________________
18. Reassemble the pulley housing to the unit.
