Using Other Functions
Direct Function (VSX-839RDS)
The DIRECT FUNCTION is designed in case you have an external video source connected to your TV (a video
source that is not going through the receiver). For this explanation we'll call this the "external video deck." You'd
like to control the external video deck with this unit's remote control so you've assigned it a function button (for
example purposes, the VCR 2 button). Yet, if you put the receiver in VCR 2 mode you'll get no picture on your
TV because the external video deck signal is not going through the receiver. To get around this problem you set
the DIRECT FUNCTION for VCR 2 to OFF. Now when you press VCR 2 function button you can control the
external video deck with the remote but the receiver does not go into VCR 2 mode.
To set a multi-Control button to DIRECT OFF:
1 Press RECEIVER.
This switches the remote to the surround setup mode.
2 Press REMOTE SETUP and hold for three
seconds.
The LED will blink twice.
3 Press the MULTI CONTROL button which
you want to set to OFF.
4 Press 9, 8, then 3.
The LED blinks twice to indicate the button has been set to
DIRECT FUNCTION OFF.
To set a multi-Control button to DIRECT ON:

TV CONT doesn’t have this feature and thus can’t use the
DIRECT FUNCTION.
