Filler Cushions
Therapy & ambulaTion
Posey Filler Cushions may be used to help reduce the risk of serious injury or death
from entrapment to certain at-risk patients from the “gaps” or “pockets” at the head
of the Posey Bed when the head of the bed must be raised. Materials used meet
California #117, Section E Flame Retardancy Standards.
REF
8021 Posey Filler Cushions
At-Risk Patients Include
• Patients who, because of mental or physical disability, cannot reposition or
remove him or herself from a confined area in the bed.
• Any other patient identified by the physician, the care plan, or Interdisciplinary
Healthcare Team (IDHT) to be at risk of entrapment in the gaps created when the
head of the Posey Bed is up.
Instructions for Use:
1. Raise the head of the hospital bed to the desired angle.
2. Hold up the Posey Filler Cushion from the Top (shortest side).
3. Insert the Posey Filler Cushion between the mattress and the side panel of the
canopy, with the Top (shortest side) at the head of the mattress and the longest
side along the base of the mattress.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to insert the other Filler Cushion on the other side of the
bed.
5. Make sure that both Filler Cushions are securely in place and cannot be removed
by the patient and that the patient cannot crawl under or around the Posey Filler
Cushions.
Patient Monitoring
Monitor per facility policy to ensure that the Posey Filler Cushions cannot be
removed by an at-risk patient and that an at-risk patient cannot crawl under or
around the Posey Filler Cushions. A failure to heed this warning may result in serious
injury or death from suffocation or entrapment.
Consult the physician or the IDHT to find an alternative method of treatment for any
at-risk patient who is able to remove or crawl under or around the Posey Filler
Cushions. An alternative to help reduce the risk of entrapment is to lower the head
of the bed until the mattress is flat, remove the Posey Filler Cushions, and use a
Posey Torso Cushion (Cat. No. 8025) to support the patient’s head and torso.
