1 Volume Shredder overview
Volume Shredder, which is available in Remote Web Console, securely erases data on P9500
open and mainframe storage systems by overwriting the data. Overwriting prevents restoration of
the data.
Data security practices and Volume Shredder
Volume Shredder overwrites data from three to eight times in a volume with dummy data. When
the user of a volume changes to another user, you should purge data stored by the previous user.
Because of how disk drives write data to disks, overwriting data one or two times might not be
enough to ensure that no one can restore the data. The best practice is to overwrite data at least
three times with dummy data. By default, Volume Shredder overwrites data three times.
Volume Shredder is designed to comply with DoD5220.22-M (National Industrial Security Program).
Volume types that you can overwrite
You can use Volume Shredder to overwrite volumes that have a status of blocked, such as logical
device (LDEV) or custom volume (CV), of all emulation types.
You cannot use Volume Shredder to overwrite data on the following types of volumes:
•
Volumes that have a status of Normal
•
Pool volumes
•
Business Copy/Snapshot virtual volumes
•
Fast Snap virtual volumes
•
Journal volumes
•
Volumes to which you cannot write (the access attribute is not read/write)
Example of Volume Shedder use
The following figure shows user data that the system is overwriting three times. Volume Shredder
is configured to overwrite the data using the following pattern:
•
The first overwrite is 00.
•
The second overwrite is FF.
•
The third overwrite is 00.
