3 Verifying your software and hardware environment with
the Insight Software Advisor
This chapter describes how to use the Insight Software Advisor to analyze and test your software and
hardware environment after the initial installation.
Running the Insight Software Advisor after installation
During the Insight software installation process, you ran the Insight Software Advisor before beginning the
installation and then again just after you selected the software you wanted to install or upgrade. The Insight
Software Advisor analyzed and tested your current software and hardware environment to ensure that it met
all installation criteria before you began an installation or upgrade process. The results identify issues or
deficiencies with the target server that would cause issues with HP Systems Insight Manager and its integrated
Insight software products.
However, you can run the Insight Software Advisor at any time to provide diagnostic information on conditions
that might affect the performance of HP Systems Insight Manager and any Insight software product.
Consider running the Insight Software Advisor any time you change OS tunable parameters, install new
software, reduce the memory or CPUs on a host, or anything else in your environment that changes after
the installation.

Using the Insight Software Advisor filtering capability
The Insight Software Advisor contains a filtering capability that enables you to restrict the tests to only those
related to a specific software product or software product feature.
To use the filtering capability, click Filter... near the top of the Insight Software Advisor page.
You can restrict tests to run on one or more of the following software products:

Systems Insight Manager
•
Insight Control
•
Insight Dynamics
For example, to test only Insight Control software and elminate the tests that are run on the other two products,
click Insight Control.
You also have the option to click the Customize... button to test only certain individual software features
within a given product or products. However, you cannot test a combination of a product and a customized
list of features. You can only select one or more entire software products or create one customized list of
individual software product features.
Any time you use the filtering capability, you must click Run Now to refresh the test criteria and start the
testing process again.
Using test results to take corrective action
When you run the Insight Software Advisor, it provides results for each test it runs. Test results that are not
successful provide a link to a corrective action. HP recommends that you click on the task result link for any
tasks that resulted in minor, major, or failures. Clicking on the link opens a detailed event log, which might
help you understand the reason why the test was not successful to help you resolve the problem.
HP requires that you investigate all test results that are not successful and take corrective action to fix the
items that caused a test to have major errors or to have a failed execution.
