4. Kinetics settings. The update rate controls how frequently the absorbance vs. timeline is re-

drawn. For most reactions, one update per 100ms is about right. Set the update rate you want to
take and the wavelength range you want to monitor for absorbance. The Range selection is the
wavelength or wavelength range around Lambda max. Use the cursor to take a reading for
Lambda max and select say 10 nm each side. In this case the range is set for 620 to 635nm.

5. Get ready. The default kinetics screen opens two windows: the graph of absorbance vs. time at

the top and the absorbance spectrum at the bottom. Set the time axis in the drop down box to
match your expected reaction time. Start the reaction and click on the green Start button. The
following example shows the reaction of a chlorine based bleach on green food coloring.
