FREE MOTION WORK
Decorative Designs —
The darning technique is very effective
when used for monogramming and in the
creation of decorative designs.
Trace or transfer the design to be wor
ked to the right side of the fabric. Place
the work in embroiderY hoops large
enough to encompass the entire design.
Be ^ure the fabric is held taut.
• Preparé the machine as for darning
(see
pages 27
and
28).
Designs may be "etched" by outlining
with short running stitches or filled by
placing the stitches close together, using
the, back and forth hoop motion. For a
crisp clean edge,, filled portions should
be outlined with a running stitch.
Move hoops slowly, following the out
line of the design. Maintain an even rate
of speed so that the stitches are evenly
spaced.
A test sample should be made before
proceeding with the actual work to de
termine stitch setting and: spacing. Some
fabrics may require addition of an under
lay of crisp lawn or organdie.
