Appendix C: Implementing Copy Protection
Copy protection is a feature to hinder unauthorized copying that can be
optionally written into data CDs created (not duplicated) with the
DIRECTOR. This offers a basic level of defense against copying
attempts by inserting and writing invalid (corrupt) blocks into the data
area of the CD-ROM.
The DIRECTOR’s copy protection function is designed to obstruct
commercial duplication equipment and consumer software that copies
discs at the block-level. It will not, however, prevent discs from being
re-authored one file at a time using a CD-R/RW recorder and a pre-
mastering program (such as Roxio Easy CD Creator and Toast,
CeQuadrat WinOnCD, Ahead Nero, NTI CD-Maker, and others). To
prevent this from happening the level of protection can be increased by
writing your application to check the CD for the presence of specific
corrupted files before it will function.
Note: Copy protected discs cannot be duplicated by the DIRECTOR.
It is also important to remember that copy protected discs may
also be mistakenly identified by industrial mastering systems
as containing errors and therefore should not be used as a
master disc for mass replication purposes.
Copy Protection Defect Files
The DIRECTOR adds copy protection to CDs it creates by employing a
user created defect file (saved with a “DEF” extension) to define how and
where the necessary invalid blocks will be written on the disc. The two
types of defect schemes offered by the DIRECTOR (Type 1 and 2), as well
as their related defect file examples, are presented below. Use a text editor
to create and save your defect file, and enter the name of the defect file into
the COPY PROTECTION FILE field in the Job tab when specifying the
elements of your disc for production.
