Step 4 – Belt Installation
Lightly oil the sealing surface of the upper gear with COMP Cams® Cam & Lifter Installation (#152,
#153) to prevent seal damage during installation. Install the upper gear over the cam and rotate the cam
with the dowel pin in the six o-clock position. Then rotate the lower gear until the keyway is in the
twelve o-clock position. Remove the upper gear. Keeping the upper gear rotated the same as it came
off the engine; slip the belt over the upper gear. Then with the upper gear in one hand, slip the belt
over the lower gear, making sure that the timing marks on both gears stay aligned. Once aligned, slide
the upper gear onto the cam enough to start the cam retention bolt. Fully tighten the cam bolt and
torque to 40-45 ft/lbs. while holding the crank from spinning with a crank socket such as those
available from COMP Cams®. Use thread lock to prevent the cam bolt from loosening during engine
operation. Reinstall the belt guard, removed in step three, onto the lower gear. Use a small amount of
thread lock on the retaining screws. At this time, check the belt for proper alignment. If the belt is out
of alignment, this must be corrected before continuing.
The cam bolt supplied with this kit is for use of the optional mechanical fuel pump adaptor and
eccentric. If this adaptor is not to be used, a standard cam bolt can be substituted.
Step 5 – Cam Timing Adjustment
To adjust cam timing while degreeing your cam, Loosen the six nuts in the center of the upper gear and
turn the crankshaft accordingly (counterclockwise to advance the cam, clockwise to retard the cam).
Make small adjustments until you reach the desired intake centerline. Retighten the six nuts when
finished before starting the engine or engine damage may occur.
Step 6 – Water pump Installation
Install the two (2) small o-rings into the grooves machined into the main plate. There is no need to
install a standard gasket here. Bolt the water pump on using the appropriate length bolts and torque to
35 ft/lbs. Some electric water pumps will make cam adjustments easier without removal while belt
driven water pumps will need to be removed.
Step 7 – Mechanical Fuel Pump Installation (Optional)
COMP Cams® offers an optional adaptor and eccentric for a mechanical fuel pump if desired. Install
the supplied cam bolt from the belt drive kit using a small amount of thread lock. Slide the eccentric
over the stud, making sure the dowel pin engages the hole at the bottom of the eccentric. A longer
dowel pin may be necessary. Install the supplied washer and nut and torque to 40-45 ft/lbs. Check for
water pump interference before continuing.
Remove the two bolts on the right-hand side (facing the engine) of the main plate. Tighten the two
button head Allen bolts through the fuel pump adaptor. Install the adaptor onto the main plate using the
two Allen bolts. Torque to 28 ft/lbs. Place the gasket over the studs with the rubber portion facing into
the hole in the adaptor. Insert the fuel pump arm through the gasket and under the bearing of the
eccentric. To ease installation of the fuel pump, rotate the eccentric with the offset in the up position.
Tighten the fuel pump into place using the supplied nuts and torque to 65 ft/lbs.
