Push rod guides
NOTE: The push rod guides are a wear item. On
extreme cases, the guides can wear to a
point that the push rods slip out from under
the rocker arms.
To remove/replace the push rod guides:
1.
Disconnect and ground the spark plug high tension
lead.
2.
Remove the engine shroud by following the proce-
dures described in Chapter 6: Starters
3.
Remove the spark plug using a 13/16” or 21mm
wrench.
4.
Rotate the crankshaft until it is at TDC of the com-
pression stroke by following the steps described in
the valve lash section of Chapter 1: Introduction.
5.
Remove the four screws securing the valve cover
using a 10mm wrench.
6.
Remove the rockers and fulcrum nuts using a 14
mm wrench and a 3 mm hex key. See Figure 9.11.
7.
Remove the push rods.
8.
Remove the rocker studs using a 12 wrench. See
Figure 9.12.
9.
Remove the push rod guide.
10.
Install the guide by following the previous steps in
reverse order.
NOTE: Tighten the rocker studs to a torque of 141 -
177 in lbs (16 - 20 Nm).
11.
Adjust the valve lash by following the steps
described in Chapter 1: Introduction.
12.
Test run the engine in a safe area before returning it
to service.
