installing and working with application
programs on your computer.
Installing application programs
Your computer has several application programs already installed, as well as
some programs that need to be installed before you can use them. The
programs that come with your computer include
m
AppleScript, which allows you to automate any actions you perform
repeatedly on your Macintosh
m
Drive Setup, which enables you to initialize, test, and update hard disks and
other storage media. Drive Setup lets you partition very large disks (up to 2
terabytes).
m
PowerTalk, which provides built-in mail and collaboration services
m
text-to-speech software that allows your Macintosh to speak typed text in
compatible applications such as SimpleText
m
Speakable Items, speech recognition software that lets you give spoken
commands to the computer and have the computer respond by executing
the commands and giving computer-voice feedback
You’ll find these and other programs in the Apple Extras folder on your hard
disk. (Drive Setup is in the Utilities folder.) To find out if a program needs to
be installed, look inside the program’s folder for an icon labeled Installer. If
you find an Installer icon and want to use that program, double-click the
Installer and follow the instructions on the screen.
