1. Introduction

The Detcon Ballast Monitor is a sequential 4 channel gas monitor unit. The sensor assembly, discussed

in the attached sensor manual, is specified at time of order as to gas and range of detection and other options.
The NEMA 7X rating is by definition explosion proof and therefore is suitable for outdoor location in
electrically hazardous environments.

The enclosure houses a 24 VDC power supply, flow pump and flow fault detection circuit. The unit is

equipped with terminal blocks for connection of 120VAC and RS-485 communications to the Ballast Monitor
Controller. An internal panel mount fuse is provided for pump protection.

The unit consists of a sensor that monitors four separate input gas samples via four solenoids. As a

specific sample is called for, the appropriate solenoid is actuated to port the correct sample to the sensor
assembly. The selected gas sample is then routed through externally mounted flow controls which include a 3-
way selector valve for sample or calibration, a sample flow meter and a Bypass flow meter both with an
adjustable valve. An externally mounted condensation blocker is provided for the gas sample input.


The Ballast Monitor employs a DA-4 module for monitoring the sensor and the Flow Fault PCA, and an

RL4 module for controlling the solenoid gas channel sample selection. Both of these modules are controlled
by the Ballast Monitor Controller via the RS-485 Modbus™.

2. Installation


The Ballast Monitor is a very heavy enclosure, which has some fragile components attached to it. Care should
be taken when mounting the enclosure to avoid damage to external components, or injury to personnel.

1. Securely mount the enclosure (refer to Figure 1). The mounting slots are 7/16” wide.
