Setups for the optical digital connection
• To listen to the sound thr ough speakers connected to a r eceiver
(amplifier) which has a digital connector and lacks a built-in DTS,
Dolby Digital or MPEG decoder
, or to output the sound to a digital
component such as a DA T or MD deck
Set the “AUDIO SETUP” items in the setup display (page 91) as shown in
the illustration below . These ar e the default settings.
z If you have a digital component with a built-in DTS, Dolby Digital or MPEG
decoder
You can enjoy multi-channel sur round sound by connecting the component via the
OPTICAL OUT connector using an optical digital connecting cor d (not supplied).
For details on hookups and settings, see page 22.
Notes
When you have made the connections using an optical digital connecting cor d,
do not set “DOLBY DIGIT AL” to “DOLBY DIGIT AL,” “MPEG” to “MPEG” and
“DTS” to “ON” in “DIGIT AL OUT.” If you do, a loud noise will suddenly come
out from the speakers, af
fecting your ears or causing the speakers to be
damaged.
• When you have made the connections using an optical digital connecting cor d, set
“VES” to “OFF” in the Contr ol Menu display (page 60). Other wise, the player will
not output the following signals fr
om the OPTICAL OUT connector.
– Dolby Digital signals (when you select “DIGIT AL OUT” in “AUDIO SETUP” and
set “DOLBY DIGITAL” to “D-PCM”)
– MPEG audio
• When you have made the connections using an optical digital connecting cor d and
output the signals which do not r eproduce the Dolby Sur round (Pro Logic) ef fect,
set “DOWNMIX” to “NORMAL” in “AUDIO SETUP” in the setup display.
• You cannot make digital audio recordings of discs recorded in multi-channel
surround format directly using an MD deck or DAT deck.
