Glossary

Dry signal:

EQ:

MIDI:

MIDI bank:

MIDI channel:

MIDI Controller messages:

MIDI Foot Controller:

A signal that is not processed by an effect: the original, unchanged signal.

An abbreviation for Equalizer.

An acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. MIDI allows electronic musical instru

ments (and effects units) to communicate with each other.

Usually, Program Change message 1 selects 1, 2 selects 2, etc. However, this can be changed so
that, for example. Program Change message 4 selects effect program 7, etc. These changes can
be stored in one of the FX550 MIDI banks: A, B, C & D. Each bank can be set to receive Pro

gram Change messages on just 1 MIDI channel or all 16 (OMNI).

MIDI messages can be sent on any one of 16 channels. Only devices that are set to the same
MIDI channel as the transmitting device will respond to the messages.

These messages are typically used to control functions that allow you to add expression to a per
formance in real time. Common MIDI Controllers include volume, modulation wheel, and
breath control. The FX550 can receive two MIDI Controllers that can control up to two effect
parameters in real time.

A device such as the Yamaha MFC06 that can be used to select FX550 eifect programs and

bypass effects.

MIDI Program Change Message (MIDI PGM):

These messages are typically used to select different voices, sounds, patches, programs, etc., on
MIDI devices. MIDI Program Change messages 1 ~ 100 can be used to select FX550 effect pro

grams 1 ~ 99, 00.

Modulation:

Controlling a variable parameter using an LFO (low frequency oscillator). The LFO frequency
(modulation speed) and the amount of control (modulation depth) can usually be adjusted. Mod

ulation effects include chorus, flanger, tremolo, etc.

A electronic switch that opens when the signal level falls below a set threshold point and closes
when the signal level exceeds that same threshold point. Used to shut off unwanted hiss and

noise while you are not playing.

The MIDI mode in which a device responds to MIDI data on all 16 MIDI channels.

Preset effect programs 1 ~ 50:

FX550 effect programs that can be edited, but not replaced by a new program. A preset program
that has been edited can be stored or copied as a user effect program.

Real time control:

Controlling FX550 effect parameters while you play.

User effect programs 51 ~ 99, 00:

FX550 effect programs that can be edited and stored.

Noise gate:

OMNI:

Wet signal:

A signal that has been processed by an effect.
