About maximum heart rate
HR
max
is used to estimate energy expenditure. HR
max
is the highest number of heart-
beats per minute during maximum physical exertion. HR
max
is also useful when
determining training intensity. The most accurate method for determining your indi-
vidual HR
max
is to perform a maximal exercise stress test in a laboratory.
RESTING HR
RESTING HR
: Set your resting heart rate.
About resting heart rate
A person’s resting heart rate (HR
rest
) is the lowest number of heart beats per minute
(bpm) when fully relaxed and without distractions. Age, fitness level, genetics, health
status and gender affect the HR
rest
. HR
rest
is decreased as the result of car-
diovascular conditioning. A normal value for an adult is 60-80 bpm, but for top athletes
it can be below 30 bpm. An exceptionally high HR
rest
can be a sign of over-exertion or
illness.
