Using the Freecom USB 3.0 Controller PCI Express
Chapter 3: Using the Freecom USB 3.0 Controller PCI
Express
This chapter provides information on using the card after it has been installed in your
computer.
Hub connections
You can connect more than 2 USB devices to the USB 3.0 Controller PCI Express if you
use a hub.
Since USB devices are "hot pluggable", they can be connected to and disconnected from
a computer without having to switch off the computer.
If you disconnect a hub from the connection tree, the USB devices connected to the hub
become temporarily unavailable. In this case, you must reconnect them so that they can
be recognised again.
The Freecom USB 3.0 Controller PCI Express can supply the devices with power via the
cable connection. This power supply is limited. For information on power requirements,
please refer to the power supply section of your device operating instructions.
USB cable
The USB 3.0 standard allows cable connections up to a maximum length of 3.0 m. This
affects the maximum distance between devices.
Power supply of your device
USB 3.0 guarantees a limited power supply between the connection cables. Some devices
require their own power supply. Other devices need more power than the bus can supply
and can be powered using a power pack. Before you connect a device, be sure to check
how it is to be powered. For this and for instructions on connecting the device, refer to
the relevant manual.
If a device draws more power from the Freecom USB 3.0 Controller PCI Express than
permitted, the card switches off the connection and an error message appears on the
screen. This is to avoid damage to your computer or your device (short circuiting). After
having disconnected this device, the port is available for other devices.
