General
This chapter contains general information on USB technology and the specific features
of the USB 3.0 Controller PCI Express.
System requirements
In order to use the Freecom USB 3.0 Controller PCI Express, following components are
needed:
• Intel Pentium III / AMD Duron 900 MHz or higher
• 512 MB RAM or higher
• An unused PCIe slot on your mainboard
• CD-ROM drive
• Operating system: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
Main features of the USB 3.0 Controller PCI Express
USB 3.0 is the new USB standard. USB 3.0 enables data transfer rates of up to 5 Gbit/s
while simultaneously maintaining downwards compatibility with older devices with
USB 2.0 or 1.1.
The USB 3.0 Controller PCI Express is a host controller card with a PCIe interface, the USB
3.0 Controller ExpressCard is an adapter card with ExpressCard interface. Both have 2
USB ports, each capable of a data transfer rate of up to 5 Gbit/s.
The USB 3.0 Controller PCI Express supports "hot plugging". In other words, you can
simply connect and disconnect the devices without having to shut down the computer.
This enables real Plug'n Play functionality.
Using hubs, you can connect a maximum of 127 devices to the USB 3.0 Controller PCI
Express.
