Application 2: Surveillance cameras for key areas, cameras in parking lot,
and biometric access control devices and time clock
Now let’s also say your Operations Manager wants four additional cameras placed on
existing light poles at the corners of the property to cover all sides of the building. The
poles are more than 330 feet (100 meters) from the server room. AC power is provided
at the base of the poles, but plugging cameras into the AC lines to the flood lamps would
be problematic. Management would also like to install a biometric time clock terminal
connected to the Human Resources server. This device could also use PoE for mounting
in a convenient location. Since security problems in the area have been on the rise,
management also would like to better control building access using some form of
remote-actuating door locks.
This project has gotten more complex, but is still a great application
for Signamax PoE.
IP-controllable devices are available to control building access and they can be powered
via PoE, eliminating the need to run AC power to the doors. The outdoor cameras will
likely require PTZ capability to provide the coverage desired, along with a higher
wattage. The Signamax 065-1810Z media converters are ideal for this application, as
they are hardened to withstand harsh environments. They will likely be mounted on the
light pole in a box that doesn’t require temperature control. Since these media converters
use a separate power supply, they will not be included in the power requirements calcu-
lation of the Ethernet switch in the server room. The fiber terminates in the server room on
100BaseFX multimode SFP modules inserted into the 065-7861POE switch’s dual-rate
SFP receptacles. This flexibility saves money over external fiber conversion and makes
for a cleaner installation.
As noted in Figure 3, for this complex installation we have changed the PoE switch to a
higher-capacity Signamax switch with four 100/1000Base dual media ports, plus two
100/1000Base SFP-only ports. The cameras at the corners of the property are powered
by a PoE+ media converter and their individual power supplies. The media converters
connect to the switch through fiber optic cables.

This scalable PoE infrastructure can support more PoE and
PoE+ devices as needed. For example, the 065-7861POE model
can provide PoE+ capability for additional devices within a
cable distance of 330 feet (100 meters) from the server room.
