Sample PoE Applications
Application 1: Surveillance cameras
Your organization would like to mount surveillance cameras at four key points on the
building’s exterior. The devices are fixed, wide-angle IP cameras with motion detection,
capable of monitoring any areas of concern from the four designated points. There is no
AC power at each camera location, although there is an AC power outlet in the server
room within six feet. Based on accepted structured cabling standards, you should run
Category 5 or better cables to the four cameras, with each camera no more than 330
feet (100 meters) from the outlet. The operations manager says drilling and sealing a
hole through the exterior wall for each camera’s cable is no problem.
This is an ideal application for Signamax PoE solutions.
The Signamax model 065-7308POE-FP PoE switch will support the four IP cameras
along with a network video recorder (a non-PoE device) to record the video captured by
the cameras. The 065-7308POE-FP switch will supply up to the maximum 15.4 watts of
power over the same cable that supports the IP video stream each camera produces.
The IP cameras all meet the standard for PoE IEEE 802.3af. They communicate to the
switch that they are PoE-powered devices and the maximum power draw they require,
in watts.

Each IP camera’s data carriage and power is provided by
the Signamax 065-7308POE-FP PoE switch. The cable
distance between each IP camera and the switch is within
330 feet (100 meters).
