How to Configure PoE
Step 1:
Define Your Project Objectives, Scope and Budget
A successful PoE project begins with defining what you hope to accomplish.
What is the project’s purpose? What do you need to achieve, and what would you like
to achieve, ideally? What is your budget? What is the scope of the current project?
How much future growth must it allow for, if any? What resources are available to
assist? It’s critical that you answer these questions upfront, before moving into the
next phase of the project.
Step 2:
Develop Your Project Layout/Design
Once you’ve defined and secured agreement for your project objectives, scope
and budget, you can begin to design your PoE installation. At this stage, it’s
important to determine:
-
The location of your PoE devices
-
The topology you will use
-
The types of devices you will use
-
Any installation contingencies
In selecting the types of devices, don’t assume your device is 802.3af/at compliant
just because it’s listed as PoE-capable. Since there is no requirement for PSEs to
perform both Mode A and Mode B, you must verify with the vendor documentation
which mode the specific device uses. You must also confirm the specific model
numbers and operation of the equipment required.
Step 3:
Determine Your Power Consumption Values
At this point, you’re ready to determine the power consumption of the powered
devices your project will involve.
-
First, determine the total load of your power sourced equipment by adding
together the power requirements of all of the powered devices. Then add a 25
percent buffer to allow for future growth.
-
Next, determine if the application requires PoE+ or PoE devices. This will
determine if your PSE switch will need to be PoE-capable or PoE+-capable.
Step 4:
Select Your Power Source Equipment
The power source equipment for your project can be switches (also called endspan
devices), power injectors (midspan devices), or a mix of both. The equipment must
be sized based on the ports served from a specific location or locations, including
both PoE/PoE+ ports and those that don’t require PoE/PoE+ service. The power
capacity must be sized based on the mix of ports requiring PoE and PoE+ service,
while also providing the scalability to allow for future growth. PoE solutions provided
by Signamax are ideal for these projects as they provide significant scalability.
