PoE Device Types
In this section of the PoE Applications Guide, we’ll look at the three types of PoE devices: power
sourcing equipment (PSE), power injectors (PIs), and powered devices (PDs).
Power Injector (PI)
A power injector is a midspan type of PSE. It is typically a pass-through
RJ45 box which adds PoE.
Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE)
PSE is a specially configured power supply
designed to provide power safely to a valid
powered device, such as these examples
from the Signamax PoE line of solutions.
Powered Device (PD)
A powered device is an end device that accepts and uses
power from the Ethernet cable for its operation. Powered
devices have different classifications.
- Class 1:
Power is limited to 3.84 W (over two pairs),
making this a very low power device.
- Class 2:
Power is limited to 6.49 W (over two pairs),
making this a low power device.
- Class 3:
Provides power up to 13 W (over two pairs),
making this a mid-range power device.
- Class 4:
Provides power up to 25.5 W (over two pairs),
making it a good choice for high-power applications.
