4. Bus compressing the kick
The kick channels are processed through their own
bus compressors. These add the neccessary punch
to the sound of the kick drum.
The same settings were used for each kick channel’s
bus compressor.
5. Bringing back the overheads and treating the cymbals
As you can hear, re-introducing the overhead channels results in the
sound of the drums suddenly becoming a lot more ‘real’, with a sense of
space and air.
There is also some high-end boost (by a few dB) on the cymbal directs,
along with some low end roll-off. Some light bus compression is also
applied to give the cymbals a bit more sustain.
6. Adding some artificial reverb
This is an example of what a touch of artificial reverb can do. A room setting with 0ms
of predelay is used, with a reverb decay time of just under 1 second. The reverb tail is
shaped using the EQ on the plugin, with some roll-off on the highs and lows.
