microprocessor is much faster. The PCI bus operates at a frequency of 33 MHz as
opposed to the 8.25-MHz operating frequency of the ISA bus.
The built-in video controller includes 2 MB of video memory built into the sys-
tem board.
Built-In Audio Controller
The built-in audio controller is a single-chip sound solution. The audio controller
connects to the ISA bus.
The audio controller has analog jacks for line-in and microphone input. The single
line-out output jack provides stereo output for a line-level input to an external
amplifier or drives stereo headphones. See “Technical Specifications” found later
in this chapter for audio jack input and output specifications.
Built-In NIC
The Dell OptiPlex GXi systems have an integrated 10/100-Mbps 3Com
®
PCI
3C905 Ethernet NIC subsystem. The system contains either a 100BASE-TX or
100BASE-T4 NIC daughter board, depending on network cabling require-
ments. Both NIC daughter boards support the 10BASE-T Ethernet standard. To
distinguish the two boards, the designation T4 appears in the upper-right corner
of the 100BASE-T4 board, as shown in Figure 1-10. For 10BASE-T and
100BASE-T4 networks, Category 3 or greater wiring and connectors can be
used. For 100BASE-TX networks, Category 5 wiring and connections must be
used.
Figure 1-10. NIC Daughter Board
The NIC subsystem connects to the Ethernet network through a single RJ45
connector on the back panel of the computer. The RJ45 connector and NIC
interface circuitry is mounted on the daughter board, which plugs into the sys-
tem board.
