A. LAYING OUT THE S&S® EFI WIRE HARNESS
CAUTION
WARNING
WARNING
WARNING
Take special care not to route the wire directly over areas prone to reach high temperatures. Failure to do so may result in damage to your
wire harness and other motorcycle electronics which can result in costly repair and service fees.
Do not connect the battery until told to do so in these instructions. Failure to do so may result in damage to your wire harness and other
motorcycle electronics which can result in costly repair and service fees. Leave the battery disconnected during the entirety of this
installation prevents accidental starting of the motorcycle which could cause injury to you or others around you.
1- Begin by reviewing the S&S EFI wire harness layout diagram in the back of these instructions. Understanding what the connectors are and
where they will go will prove to be beneficial in quickly completing this process.
NOTE: A trick that S&S technicians use while installing the S&S EFI wire harness is to label each connector with a piece of masking tape and a marker.
Simply write the connector name and where it needs go on the masking tape, then wrap that masking tape around the appropriate connector.
2- Start the layout by placing the fuse and relay block assembly in the rear area of the battery box location underneath the seat, or wherever the
electronics will be hidden on your custom built motorcycle.
3- Route each lead to its specified location until all the leads have reached their intended destination.
S&S does not recommend cutting or splicing into the harness as this may affect the performance of the S&S EFI wire harness or the
component the wire leads are routed to. Any modificationto the S&S EFI wire harness will void the warranty of the harness and possibly
the engine.
4- Secure the placement of the leads to the frame tubes by using zip ties or other similar means.
NOTE: Make sure that none of the leads are in tension during normal operation. For example, the handlebar control leads will need to have room for
movement during the rotation of the steering head.
5- Finish by securely bolting down the ground leads to any location of the frame which will act as a universal ground necessary for the operation
of the S&S EFI wire harness.
NOTE: The ground wires must be attached to a bare metal surface.
6- Refer to Parts B, C, D and E of these instructions for connecting additional components.
B. KNOCK SENSOR MOUNTING LOCATION AND INSTALLATION
Always wear eye protection when working on your motorcycle.
NOTE: There are two mounting locations possible for mounting the knock sensor. Please take special note to which location can be used as it is dependant
on which knock sensor kit is needed. Read the descriptions of each location, and then examine your motorcycle. The knock sensor will operate sufficiently
in either location.
Location 1: Location 1 can be found on the front side of the rear cylinder head, across from the temperature sensor on the front head. Some S&S
heads have an unused threaded hole in the rear head near the intake port. Stock and some S&S heads do not have the unused threaded hole. If the
extra threaded hole is present, install the S&S knock sensor kit #55-1096 in this location by following the instructions for location 1. If the threaded
hole is not present, use location 2.
Location 2: Location 2 is at the top motor mount on rear cylinder head attachment point. All stock heads and some early S&S heads do not have
the unused, threaded hole across from the temperature sensor, and must use the top motor mount location. This will require S&S knock sensor kit
PN 55-1015. See step 2 for knock sensor motor mount installation instructions.
