2-6 Operation
2.2 Installing Threaded Specimens
Perform the following steps to install a threaded specimen in the Grip.
The procedure assumes the Grip base has been properly installed in
the load unit as described in Section 3. This procedure also assumes
that the operator is familiar with all operating aspects of the system
electrical controller and interlock restrictions that apply to starting the
hydraulic power supply.
Equipment and materials required includes:
• a torque wrench
• MolyKote ® G-n paste (part number 110102-07).
• the threaded adapter
WARNING
Failure to zero dc error will result in sudden actuator
movement.
This can cause injury to personnel and/or damage to
e q u i p m e n t .
Do not apply system hydraulic pressure with other than zero dc error
(command = feedback).
1. Select system force control in the most sensitive range
available. Displacement control is not recommended in the
following steps, however, if only displacement control is
available, use extreme care not to apply specimen-damaging
forces.
2. Apply full system hydraulic pressure according to applicable
system procedures. Use extreme care not to cause rapid
actuator movement when performing the following steps.
3. Adjust the position of the actuator and crosshead as necessary
to allow installation of the grip collars and specimen.
4. Remove system hydraulic pressure.
5. Lubricate the socket head cap screws with a thin coat of
MolyKote G-n paste and set them within easy reach.
6. Thread the adapter onto the specimen until approximately 3
threads are showing on the opposite end.
7. Slide the collar over the end of the specimen. Ensure it is
oriented as shown in Figure 2-4.
8. Install the assembly into the pilot of the lower grip base as
shown in Figure 2-4.
9. Install the socket head cap screws finger tight.
