Warning
5.2 checking and removing blades
the chipper blades will eventually become dull, making chip-
ping difficult. It is recommended that the chipper blades be
sharpened every 5-15 hours of chipper operation. the fol-
lowing symptoms indicate your blades need sharpening:
Severe vibration when feeding material into the chipper.
Small diameter branches do not self-feed.
Chips discharge unevenly or have stringy tails–
especially when chipping green branches.
Sharpen the blades on a bench grinder or take them to a
professional.
To remove The chiPPing blades:
Remove the two 3/8" retaining bolts on the main frame
access cover.
tilt access cover open to allow rotor access. the chip-
per will not operate when the cover is open. Rotate
the rotor so that the bolts holding the blades are best
accessible. to remove the inner blade, open the ac-
cess cover on top of the feed roller.
Remove the two nuts and cap screws holding the blade
itself. Repeat for all four blades. the four chipping
blades have two edges per blade and can be reversed
one time each before sharpening. If one side has not
been used, remove and reverse the chipping blades.

3.
the chipping blades are sharp!! use care when work-
ing on the machine to avoid injury.
Regrind the angled edge of the chipping blades to 45
degrees (refer to figure on the right).
Make sure some type of fixture is used to correctly hold
the blade at the proper angle.
be careful when grinding so that the blade does not
become overheated and change color (this would
remove the heat-treated properties).
use short grinding times and cool with water or some
type of liquid coolant.
try to grind an equal amount off of each blade to
maintain rotor balance.
Never sharpen or back grind the flat side of the chipping
blade. this will cause the edge to roll and the chipper
blade will be damaged, resulting in poor chipping
performance. Small imperfections such as nicks, burrs,
etc. on the mounting side of the blade will not affect
the chipping performance of the machine.

5.3 When To rePlace blades
before you remove the chipping blades, check for perma-
nent damage. Replace the blade if:
there are cracks, broken corners or nicks greater than 1/8".
the base of the cutting edge is worn or was resharpened
until it sits too close to the rotor chipping slot.
