1. Place vehicle in a location where the floor is solid and flat, with adequate lighting. Do not attempt to work
on a hot engine. Heat causes metal to expand and makes removal of fasteners difficult at best. Raise the front
of the vehicle and remove the front tires to obtain adequate access to the bottom exhaust manifold flanges. Use
large-base jack stands to support the vehicle. Do not rely on the jack! Block the tires to prevent the vehicle from
rolling off the jack stands.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Apply penetrating oil on all accessible fasteners and
fittings before attempting to remove them.
3. Disconnect the spark plug wires by grasping and gently twisting the spark plug wire boots. Do not pull on the
wires! Remove the spark plugs.
4. Disconnect the head pipes from the exhaust manifolds and remove the stock exhaust manifolds.
5. If the car has an Air Injection pump this will have to be removed as these headers will not work with it.
6. Typically the exhaust pipes in early vehicles are long gone. These instructions contemplate the removal of
old components and the installation of a new exhaust system by a competent exhaust shop. These instructions
cover only the installation of the Shorty headers. The necessary exhaust system modifications should be left to a
competent exhaust shop.
7. Unbolt the stock exhaust manifolds and remove from the car.
8. Remove the gaskets and any gasket material or any carbon deposits that remain on the head surface. The use
of a gasket removal agent or scraper will ease the removal of any gasket material. Use care not to get debris into
ports or spark plug holes.
9. Bolt the header to the head using the supplied gaskets, bolts and lock washers. Torque to factory specifica-
tions. NOTE: It is recommended that you use anti-seize on threads when installing on aluminum heads.
10. Reinstall the spark plug and wires taking care not to let any wires rest against the header tubes.
11. The headers come with two three-bolt flanges for use when mating the exhaust system to the new JBA
Headers. Bolts are also included. Note: It is recommended that a small amount of Sensor Safe High Temp
Silicone Sealant be used on the ball flange.
12. After the exhaust modifications have been made to adapt the headers to your exhaust system, recheck every-
thing! Make sure all bolts are tight.
13.
Check to make sure that all the wiring, fuel lines, transmission cooler lines, brake lines, hoses, etc. are
clear of the headers or any exhaust components and reroute or relocate those components as necessary.
Reinstall the battery cable.
14. Start the engine and let it warm up. Check for leaks. Shut engine off and let it cool down. Check to make
sure all fasteners are tight.
15. All Tubular Headers require maintenance including periodically check and retighten the header bolts.
