Preloaded Coated Filters

Cat. No. 225-9002

SKC coated fi lters are shipped preloaded in the cassett es with end plugs and
shrink bands in place. No assembly is required; they are ready to use.

Method & Chemical: OSHA 42 (modifi ed*) for 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate
(HDI), toluene-2,6 diisocyanate (2,6-TDI), and toluene 2,4-diisocyanate
(2,4-TDI). OSHA 47 (modifi ed*) for methylene bisphenyl isocyanate (MDI).
ASTM D5836 (modifi ed*) for 2,4-TDI and 2,6-TDI only

* OSHA Method 42 specifi es a fi lter loading of 0.1 mg of 1-(2-pyridyl) piperazine. OSHA 47 and

ASTM D5836 specify a fi lter loading of 1 mg of 1-(2-Pyridyl) piperazine; however, Coated
Filter 225-9002 (loading of 2 mg to increase stability and shelf-life of fi lters) is acceptable for
both sampling methods.

Filter & Coating: Glass fi ber fi lter and cellulose support pad coated with
2.0 mg of 1-(2-pyridyl) piperazine loaded into a three-piece 37-mm cassett e.
Use in the open-face sampling confi guration.

Prior to Sampling: Store at ≤ 39.2 F (4 C) for up to 6 months.

Sample Stability: Submit extracted samples to a laboratory as soon as possible
aft er sampling. Store at ≤ 39.2 F (4 C) for up to one week if delay is unavoidable.

For information on other available

coated fi lters, request SKC Publication 1219.

How to Use the SKC Preloaded Coated Filters

Do not expose coated fi lters to high temperatures or prolonged periods in
direct sunlight.

1. Select a coated fi lter cassett e for calibrating pump fl ow rate. A red plug secures
the cassett e inlet, which is clearly marked “inlet,” and a blue plug secures the outlet.
Set up the sampling train for calibration with the representative fi lter cassett e in
line. For “open-face” sampling, remove the outlet plug and the cassett e inlet section
then connect the cassett e to the sampling train. For details on sett ing up a sampling
train, refer to the SKC Sample Setup Guide “Sampling Train - Filters and Cyclones”
(SKC Publication 1166).

2. Calibrate the pump to the desired fl ow rate using a fi lm fl owmeter or calibrated
precision rotameter. For details on calibrating a pump, refer to the SKC Sample Setup
Guide “Calibrating a Pump Using a Film Flowmeter” (SKC Publication 1163).

3. Replace the cassett e used for calibration with a fresh coated fi lter cassett e
for sample collection. Attach the cassette to a worker’s collar, as close to the
breathing zone as possible, by using a filter cassette holder (SKC Cat. No.
225-1). Sample for the time specifi ed in the method and record the time.

4. Remove

the

fi lter cassett e at the end of the specifi ed sampling period and

replace the inlet and both plugs. Recheck the fl ow rate using the same cassett e
and fl owmeter used for calibration (in Step 2) to ensure that the fl ow rate has not
changed by more than 5%.

5. Don disposable gloves. Remove cassett e inlet section and use clean forceps to
remove fi lter from cassett e. Place fi lter in a glass vial containing fi eld extraction
solution following the procedure in Appendix B of OSHA Directive CPL 03-00-017
(National Emphasis Program on Isocyanates) at www.osha.gov/OshDoc/Directive_
pdf/CPL_03-00-017.pdf .

6. Submit extracted samples to a laboratory as soon as possible aft er sampling.
Store at ≤ 39.2 F (4 C) for up to one week if delay is unavoidable. Appropriately
package and ship samples, blanks, and all pertinent data to a laboratory for analysis.
Refrigerated shipment is not required. Follow all applicable hazardous materials
shipping restrictions and requirements. See Appendix B of OSHA Directive CPL 03-
00-017 for details.
