HANDSET WITH ANY OTHER PHONE MAY HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO

CAUSE HEARING LOSS IN THE EVENT OF A LIGHTNING STRIKE ON

THE OUTSIDE PLANT WIRING.
When using your telephone equipment, basic safety precautions should always

be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and injury to persons,

including the following:
• Do not use this product near water, for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl,

kitchen sink or laundry tub, in a wet basement or near a swimming pool.

• Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical

storm. There may be a remote risk of electric shock from lightning.

• Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of a leak.

Maintenance and Repair

The 5230 IP Appliance is a field replaceable unit. There are no user serviceable

parts inside the set. For repairs, return the set to an authorized Mitel Networks

dealer.

IMPORTANT! This telephone is NOT suitable for direct connection to the

public-switched telephone network. Connect this telephone to a Mitel Networks

system only.

Introduction

The 5230 IP Appliance uses your Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) as an

intuitive interface to your telephone system. With the 5230 IP Appliance PDA

Applications installed on your PDA, you can, for example, make calls from your

Contact list, synchronize your data and files, view a list of your voice mails, or

share files with other 5230 IP appliance users.

To install the PDA Personality Module

1. Select viewing angle ( or - -) (see Figure

).

2. Insert pivots first (

n

), then latches(

o

). Press latches outward to lock in

place.

3. Squeese the tab of the cover and lift the cover up to remove it

(see Figure

).

4. Insert the Personality Module (see Figure

). Make sure that the

Personality Module is compatible with your PDA (the number on the

Personality Module sticker should match the model number of your PDA).

5. Connect

to LAN,

to computer,

to handset,

to headset,

and

to the charger that came with your PDA (see Figure

).

The USB connector (

) is for future use.

Installing the 5230 Applications

1. If it’s not already done, follow the instructions in your PDA documentation

to set up your PDA and synchronize it with your computer.

2. Insert your PDA in its synchronization cradle (NOT in the 5230 IP

Appliance), then insert the 5230 IP Appliance PDA Applications CD-ROM

in your computer.

3. The installation program starts automatically. Follow the prompts to install

the applications on your PDA. The selected applications are installed on

your computer and your PDA. For more details on the installation procedure,

refer to the 5230 IP Appliance User Guide (see box).

4. When the setup program is finished, click Finish.
5. Remove the PDA from its cradle, and insert it in the 5230 Personality

Module.

Note: Keep your PDA synchronization cradle. You will need it to upgrade

your 5230 Applications software.

6. On your PDA, select the PDA Startup application in the Start menu. You

are now ready to use your 5230 IP Appliance.

Using a Local Power Supply

You must use a local power supply if your LAN cannot provide the power for

your 5230 IP Appliance.
1. Connect the LAN cable to the LAN connector of the local power supply.
2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the Phone connector on the local power
