Instructions
Note: The board also serves to store the chess fig-
ures. Unfold the board and remove the chess pieces
from the retainers before starting the game.
Both players have the same chess figures:
1 Queen
2 Bishop
1 King
2 Knights
2 Rooks
8 Pawns
 The chess figures are arranged
as illustrated; each Queen is
placed on a square of “her”
own colour. White begins the
game. The aim of the game is
to checkmate (i.e. to place the
opponent’s King in a position
of inevitable capture) and both
players must defend them-
selves by trying to prevent one
another from creating such a
situation. Playing requires in-
telligent, strategically planned
moves as well as foresight of
the opponent’s possible coun-
termoves. Each player must
ensure that each piece is de-
fended by one or more of their
own pieces.
movement
j
Queen
The queen is the most important
piece. It has unlimited freedom
of movement. The queen can be
moved any number of vacant
squares in any direction, i.e.
diagonally, horizontally or
vertically.
j
King
The king can move exactly one
square in any direction (diag-
onally, vertically, horizontally).
When a player makes a move
which threatens to capture the
opposing king, the king is said
to be in check. It is customary
to announce “check” when
making a move that puts the
opponent’s king in check.
