down before making any more. A hot glass pot can crack if it is filled with cold water.
Important: Never use the coffee pot if the glass is cracked or chipped. Never use it if the handle is loose or has
moved.
De-scaling the coffee maker:
If the coffee maker is generating large amounts of steam or is taking longer than usual to brew your coffee, it is
time to de-scale the appliance. Scale is created when calcium (limescale) and other minerals separate from water
during heating. This can affect the flavour of your coffee, increase the brewing time and may even cause the appli-
ance to become faulty.
To prevent the unwanted effects of limescale, you should de-scale the appliance regularly. This should be carried
out at least 10-12 times per year. (This assumes the hardness of tap water is a maximum 18°dH / 22.5°Clarke). In
areas where the tap water is harder than 18°dH (22.5°Clarke), de-scaling should be carried out 12-15 times per
year. If you make coffee several times a day or live in an area where tap water is very hard, you should de-scale
the appliance after every 30-40 brewing cycles. Your local water company will be able to answer any questions
about water hardness. Regular de-scaling needs to be carried out by the user and is not covered by the product
guarantee.
Please follow these instructions for de-scaling:
1. After disconnecting the appliance and allowing it to cool, fill the water tank with about 450ml of concentrated
lemon juice. You must use concentrate that is at least 50% juice. (This can be bought from most food stores).
Do not use less-concentrated lemon juice and never use any other product. Use enough liquid to reach the
upper edge of the water tank without overflowing. After filling the water tank with lemon concentrate, close
the cover on the top of the tank.
2. Fit the filter holder and empty filter to the socket under the brewing head. (Don’t use any coffee). Place the
coffee pot under the filter holder, then turn the function control to the coffee-making position.
Attention! Do not connect the coffee maker to the mains when de-scaling it. De-scaling must only be carried
out when the appliance is disconnected and at room temperature.
3. Leave the lemon concentrate in the water tank for 10-12 hours. You should remove the cover of the water
tank and leave it open for the last 2-3 hours of de-scaling. (You may notice lemon concentrate dripping into
the coffee pot, which shows that limescale deposits have been dissolved).
4. After 10-12 of de-scaling, pour out the lemon concentrate through the top of the water tank. Take care not
to let the lemon concentrate drip into other parts of the appliance. Wipe any lemon concentrate off the cover
with a dry cloth.
Attention! Never heat or brew the lemon concentrate!
The anti-scale outlet filter should now be removed from inside the brewing head for cleaning. (This is particu-
larly important in a ‘hard water’ area). The cross-head screw that holds the filter should be unscrewed with an
appropriate screwdriver. Ensure the appliance remains disconnected when doing this. Remove any limescale
and coffee residue from the outlet and from the filter.
Important: if the fixing screw cannot be removed due to limescale deposits, do not force it but contact a
specialist engineer for assistance.
5. When you have finished cleaning the brewing head and the filter, replace the filter and fix it in place with the
screw. Now fill the water tank with fresh water, switch on the appliance and complete a ‘brewing cycle’ but
without using any coffee. After the water has passed through, empty it from the coffee pot and repeat the
process. This will remove any lemon concentrate, leaving the appliance ready for daily use.
Attention!
• If this de-scaling procedure isn’t successful, you will need to contact a specialist engineer to have the appli-
ance cleaned. This should not be necessary if you carry out regular de-scaling as described above.
• Repairs to any damage caused by scale or by carrying out the de-scaling procedure are not covered by the
product guarantee.
• Always pour out the lemon concentrate used for de-scaling and the water used for rinsing. Do not drink it!
• Don’t leave the lemon concentrate in the appliance for longer than 12 hours. Always clean the appliance with
fresh water (as described) after using the lemon concentrate.
