Installing an USB printer with Plug and Play

Install ‘Dell Open Print Driver’ via MSI or Perform steps 1 -11 from ‘Installing from INF file’ – Dynamic
Instance section. Use any driver (PCL XL or PCL 5 or PS) depending on your printer supported PDLs. Plug
and Play provides automatic detection and quick installation of Dell printer models that are supported
by the Dell Open Print Driver.

Note, however, that on versions of Windows earlier than Windows Vista (Windows XP and Windows
Server 2003), installing from INF will not properly support USB Plug and Play, because the INF install
process on those platforms does not store the driver package in the Windows Driver Store. To use USB
Plug and Play on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, you must either:

• Use the MSI installer to install the Dell Open Print Driver. On pre-Vista platforms, the MSI

installer adds the driver package to the Windows Driver Store after it installs the drivers
themselves.
OR

• Add the driver package to the Windows Driver Store manually, after installing the drivers

themselves. This is done using the DPInst.exe utility, which is included in the driver package.
The steps to add the DellOPD driver package to the Windows Driver Store manually are as
follows:

1. Open a command prompt
2. Navigate to the directory where the DellOPD.inf package is stored
3. Execute the command:

i386\DPInst.exe [on 32-bit Windows]
or
amd64\DPInst.exe [on 64-bit Windows]

And follow the instruction of the Driver Package Wizard that is shown.

The following instructions and screen shots illustrate to connect an USB printer to a system where ‘Dell
Open Print Driver’ was previously installed:

1) Make sure ‘Dell Open Print Driver’ exists on your system.

For this example, we used ‘Dell V525w Inkjet Printer’ as an USB printer:

2) Make sure the printer is turned on and an USB cable is connected to the printer.
3) Now connect USB cable marked with

from the printer to the USB port on your

computer.
Note: The computer must recognize the USB connection in order for installation to work.
