PART B: SULFATE AND CHLORIDE ANIONS
In this part a water sample is passed through an ion exchange column to exchange
the associated cations (Na, Ca, Mg, etc.) for hydrogen ions, which are then titrated
with Sodium Hydroxide Solution. Two identical resin columns are furnished in this
kit. Each column can be used to exchange 20 water samples, after which it should be
discarded. Keep an accurate record of the number of times a column has been used.
1. Attach a resin column (1079) to a test tube (0778) by inserting the tip of the
column in the center hole of the tube cap. Remove the column cap.
2. Fill another test tube (0778) half full with demineralized water. Use the 1.0 mL
pipet (0354) to add 4 mL of demineralized water to the column. If the water
draining from the column is colored, add additional demineralized water in 1.0 mL
increments until the discharge is clear.
3. Use the 1.0 pipet (0354) to add 5.0 mL of sample water to the resin column. Now
discard all of the water passed through the column up to this point.
4. Add sample water to the column until the discharge reaches the 15 mL line on the
test tube. Fill the third test tube (0778) exactly to the 10 mL line with this treated
sample.
5. Add 3 drops of Total Alkalinity Indicator (2786). Cap and mix.
6. Fill the second Direct Reading Titrator, 0-500 Range (Black Print, 0383) with the
*Sodium Hydroxide, 0.1N (6248DR) and insert the tip in the cap.
7. While gently swirling the tube, titrate until the color changes from red, or red-
orange, to blue, or blue-green.
8. Read the test result from the Titrator in ppm CaCO
3
(SO

=
and Cl
–
) and record as
Result B.
PART C: CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM CATIONS
9. Fill the test tube (0608) to the 12.9 mL line with sample water.
10. Add 5 drops of *Hardness Reagent #5 (4483). Cap and swirl to mix. Add one
Hardness Reagent Tablet #6 (4484). Cap and mix.
11. Fill the 0-200 Direct Reading Titrator (Red Print, 0382) with Hardness Reagent
#7 (4487DR) and insert the tip in the cap.
12. While gently swirling the tube, titrate until the color changes from red to clear
blue.
13. Read the test result from the Titrator in ppm CaCO
3
(Ca

and Mg
++
) and record
as Result C.
Calculate the Sodium content of the test sample from the formula:
(Result A + Result B - Result C) x 0.46 = ppm Sodium
