Carefully read the instruction manual for the LaMotte Direct Reading Titrator before
performing the titration described below. Three Titrators are included in this set and
should not be used interchangeably. The test results are read directly from the scale on
the Titrator barrel. The Titrators are:

The Sodium test involves three separate titrations to determine the anions and cations
in aqueous solution. These results are then used in the formula:
ppm Sodium = (A + B - C) x 0.46
A = HCO

PROCEDURE
PART A: BICARBONATE AND CARBONATE ANIONS
1. Fill a test tube (0778) to the 10 mL line with sample water.
2. Add 3 drops of Total Alkalinity Indicator (2786). Cap and swirl to mix.
3. Fill a Direct Reading Titrator, 0-500 Range (Black Print, 0383) with *Sulfuric
Acid, 0.1N (6111DR) and insert Titrator tip in the center hole of the test tube cap.
4. While gently swirling the tube, slowly press the plunger to titrate until the blue-
green color changes to red-orange.
5. Read the test result directly from the Titrator in ppm CaCO

and record as Result A.
