These repairs should only be performed by a trained technician with the proper tools and equipment to work on a transmission.
The safety of the motorcycle rider is contingent on this repair being done properly. If you are not comfortable making these repairs or
do not think you have the proper tools, please contact the S&S® Tech Department at (608) 627-TECH for referral to a shop that can do the
repairs for you.
REMOVAL
1- Start the removal process by disconnecting the negative battery cable.
Be sure to disconnect the battery cable to prevent accidental starts during repairs.
2- Next, remove the exhaust system, primary assembly (inner and outer) and the inner primary bearing race from the transmission mainshaft.
3- Disconnect the neutral switch wiring, remove the transmission top cover and shift drum assembly.
Note: For any questions on the removal of the shift drum—or any transmission components, please refer to S&S Instruction sheet 51-1232 that is included
in this kit.
4- On FLT models, the oil filter spout will need to come off now, then on all models remove the transmission side cover.
5- With the side cover off, remove both clutch actuation pushrods from the transmission. See Picture 1.
6- Lock the transmission in two gears to stop rotation—this is accomplished by sliding two shift forks into adjacent gears. Now remove the lock
nuts from the mainshaft and countershaft. See Picture 2.
