This conversion kit replaces the No. 903090
Handwheel (on the Spindle Feed Mechanism) with
a depth-of-cut handwheel and dial to allow accu-
rate measurement of the back and forth move-
ment of the lathe spindle. Each dial marking
equals 0.002-inch (or 0.05mm) of spindle travel.
This kit will fit the AMMCO Models 3000, 4000,
4100, and 7700 brake lathes.
Installation
Remove the No. 903090 Handwheel. Save the allen set
screw for use in the new handwheel.
Push the NEW HANDWHEEL onto the shaft and lock it
in place with the set screw.
Clean the 903037 gearbox to remove all oil and dirt.
Remove backing from arrow and place near the hand-
wheel dial.
Operation
With a brake disc rotor (or flywheel, or clutch plate)
mounted on the arbor, rotate the new handwheel to
move the spindle in or out until the tool bit just touches
the face of the rotor. Loosen the dial lock knob and rotate
only the dial to zero. Retighten the lock knob.
With the cross feed handwheel, align the tool bit with
the deepest score on the face of the work. Advance the
tool bit into the bottom of the score by turning the new
handwheel.
Read the depth of the score on the dial (each dial incre-
ment equals 0.002-inch on the English scale, or 0.05 mm
on the metric scale).
Back the tool bit off the face of the work with the new
handwheel and position it towards the center of the work
for the final cut with the cross feed handwheel. Start the
lathe.
Add 0.004-inch (0.10mm)(two increments on either dial
scale) to the depth of the score read above and turn the
handwheel to this new setting (depth of score plus
0.004-inch/0.10mm). Set and tighten the spindle lock to
prevent further spindle travel.
The lathe will then clean the entire face of the piece in
one cut when the cross feed is engaged.
