STANDARD
BINOCULAR BASICS
MAGNIFICATION: A magnifi cation of factor 8, for
example, produces an image as if one were 8 times
closer to the object. The less the magnifi cation factor
is, the more comfortable the viewing is.
OBJECTIVE LENS DIAMETER: The diameter of
the objective lens determines how much light can be
gathered to form an image. For daytime use a lens
diameter of 21mm-25mm is recommended, but for
low light conditions 35mm-50mm may be necessary.
The angle of view is measured in degrees and indicates how
large the viewable fi eld is. The fi eld of view is defi ned as the
width of the viewable fi eld at a distance of 1000m from the
point of observation.
* Fully multi-coated: Each lens is multi-coated
* Multi-coated: One lens is multi-coated, other lenses are mono-coated
* Fully-coated: Each lens is mono-coated

BINOCULAR BASICS
The exit pupil is the diameter of the light image visible
through the eyepiece. The exit pupil is calculated by dividing
the objective lens diameter by the magnifi cation factor.
An exit pupil of 2-3mm is adequate for daytime use, though
where there is less light you will need binoculars with an exit
pupil of 5 to 7mm, e.g. 8x42 binoculars: 42 divided by
8 = 5.3 exit pupil in mm.

An overview about the most important features. Example: The
description 10x42 EXPS I means that this model offers 10x
magnifi cation and that the objective lens diameter is 42mm.

EYE RELIEF: The eye relief is the distance from the rear
eyepiece lens to the eye point. A long eye relief provides
a comfortable view and ease of use without image
black-out for users without glasses as well as users who
wear glasses. Insuffi cient eye relief results in a loss of fi eld
of view. For users who wear glasses an eye relief with
minimum 14mm is recommended.
Porro Prisms: Large
lenses produce needle-
sharp, razor-dimensional
images of brilliant quality.
Roof Prisms: The light
is focused directly on
the eyepiece. These
binoculars can therefore
be made lighter and
more compact.
