Range estimation can be done with different portions of the projected reticle, such as the center
dot or the ordinal points. Illustration (Figure 9) of range estimation with the DOT reticle. The
aiming dot will displace a one inch area on the target at 100 yards, two inches at 200 yards,
three inches at 300 etc. At 400 yards, an automatic ballistic compensation is accomplished
simply by placing the aiming dot at the top target’s head. With the heavy bullet loads for the
M-4 A1/ MK 12, the bullet will drop to approximately the center of torso with a 100 meter zero.
