Installing Dana Input Shaft Covers
MODELS: D170, D190, D590
Shown below are the basic steps to follow when replacing the input shaft cover in the enclosed kit. This information along
with many other details is shown in Dana service manual AXSM-0057.
INSTALLING THE INPUT SHAFT COVER:
IMPORTANT: Before installing the new input cover, inspect and thoroughly clean mating surfaces using an
appropriate solvent and clean rag.
Step 1:
Apply a bead of Loctite 518 to the carrier surface as shown in the illustration below.
Step 2:
Install input cover and capscrews. Torque to the proper specifications. Tighten fasteners in a criss cross
pattern.
[Torque Specification: 165-185 Ft. Lbs / 223-250 N.m]
Step 3:
Install input shaft bearing adjuster, adjust inward until snug against the bearing cone.
NOTE: At this time ADJUST ENDPLAY – See AXSM-0057 for detailed procedure.
Step 4:
Back off the input bearing cage adjuster one notch and check endplay.
Endplay should be between .001” to .005”. (.03mm to .13mm).
Rotate the cage in or out to get the proper setting.
Step 5:
Line up adjuster cage slot with locking fastener. Tighten fastener and torque to the proper specifications.
[Torque Specification: 20-26 Ft. Lbs / 27-35 N.m]
