Topic: New Tie Rod Ends from Dana with Grease Purging System Innovation
Affected Models: E-Series and Wide Track I-Series Steer Axles
In January 2001, Dana introduced a new design tie rod end with a purgeable grease valve at the end of the socket
housing. This was a running design change to production tie rod ends used on all E-Series and “Wide Track” I-series
steer axles. This innovation was designed to reduce contamination ingestion in the ball socket of the tie rod end. A
standard tie rod end utilizes holes in the top of the boot that permit grease to purge while greasing. These holes are
considered a primary source for contamination.
The new tie rod end (shown below) no longer has purge holes in the boot and now purges the grease through a drilled
path in the valve. When the tie rod end is greased, the grease will pass around the ball stud, through the valve and past
the o-ring. The o-ring seals the holes in the valve to stop contamination from entering. During greasing, the o-ring
expands and allows the grease to pass. Greasing should continue until clean grease is purged from the valve.
NOTE: At this time there has been no change in greasing procedures or warranty coverage.
