Casio Computer Co., Ltd. founded in April 1946 in Tokyo, Japan, nowadays is well-known as a multinational electronics company famous for manufacturing calculators, cameras, musical instruments and watches. The company was created by Tadao Kashio, an engineer working at a small subcontractor factory that produced microscope parts and gears and dreaming of becoming an inventor from the very childhood.
The first Kashio’s invention was the jubiwapipe, a finger ring device for holding a cigarette at a certain angle away from the smoker’s hand, allowing its wearer to smoke the cigarette down to its nub with his hands free. At that time Japan impoverished after the Second World War, experienced difficulties with the supply of goods. Cigarettes were valuable and Japanese smoked them down to the very nub. Very soon the yubiwapipe has become a hit product.
In search of new inventions Tadao and his three younger brothers paid attention to an electric calculator they saw in 1949 at the first Business Show in Ginza, Tokyo. They decided to develop their own calculator of the profits they got from the yubiwapipe sales. In those years most calculators either hand-operated with a crank, or electric with a motor, were much slower than today’s calculators and used mechanical gears which produced a shrill noise turning at a high speed. The decision was to employ solenoids in the development of an electric calculator without gears. In 1954 the Japan's first electric calculator was completed.
The greatest achievement of the four brothers’ invention was the adoption of the ten-key format which replaced the “full keypad” used in other calculators and implying that each digit in the number had nine keys (0-9). Besides a calculator had a unique design. Instead of three display windows, as it was in other calculators of the time - one display for each parameter and one for an answer - they have designed a single display window. All these things seem usual to us now but at that time they were revolutionary ideas, realization of which required a lot of hard work.
In 1957 Casio Computer Co., Ltd. was established. The same year Casio started to produce the first all-electric compact calculator, Model 14-A. In 1965 a desktop electronic calculator Casio 001 was released. In 1972 a personal calculator Casio 001 was presented. Sales of this model have exceeded 10 million units. 1974 is the year of the Casiotron release - a watch with a fully automatic calendar in view of month lengths and leap years. The watch showed not only hours, minutes and seconds, but also the number of days in the month. In 1980 Casio presented a digital piano Casiotone.
In 1983 there was one of the most significant events in the history of Casio company - the public presentation of the first G-Shock watch, DW-5000C, a watch that gave start to a line of watches with high mechanical resistance. The watch prototypes have been tested the same way as parts of motorcycle engines. In 1985 Casio Pela watch was released. Their key feature was the thickness of only 3.9 mm and a record low weight - 12 grams.
In 1994 watch brands appeared in the market: Baby-G – shock-waterproof watches for girls; Edifice - classic watch with sporty design elements; ProTrek – watch designed for people who are engaged in tourism and mountaineering (multi-functional watches with sensors). Nowadays Casio manufactures the following products: calculators, watches, digital cameras, PDAs, film cameras, laptops, mobile phones, electronic keyboards, dictionaries, games, computer printers, portable televisions, musical instruments.
Original in design and functionality, useful in daily life of people, all Casio products express the company’s commitment to contributing and keeping society moving forward.
