Place the decomposition vessel that is to be filled on the support. Operate the hand
lever to move the filling head down to the decomposition vessel, and push it over the
filling nozzle. Take care that the decomposition vessel is correctly positioned. If the
vessel is not correctly positioned, there will be a loud noise of escaping gas during
the filling operation. There will be a similar noise if the decomposition vessel leaks
due to wear of the seals (see Section 7 "Care and Maintenance").
After about 40 seconds, the decomposition vessel will have been filled, and can be
removed from the oxygen filling station. To do this, move the hand lever upwards;
the oxygen supply is cut off and filling stops.
The decomposition vessel is now prepared for carrying out a test.
6.5 Contact to and Positioning the Decomposition Vessel
Make sure that the guard has been installed as described in Section 3.4 "In-
stallation Location" and Section 5 "Setting-up and Initial Start-up".
Operation with Guard AOD 1.3
Place the decomposition vessel behind the Guard AOD 1.3 in the holder (see Sec-
tion 4.2 "Guard AOD 1.3" for illustration). With the knob on the front of the guard,
draw the decomposition vessel into the guard until the stop is reached at the ignition
position. In this position, the decomposition vessel is in contact with the ignition
contact of the guard and thus – as long as the ignition cable is connected to the
Remote Ignition Unit as described in Section 6 – with the remote ignition unit.
Operation with another guard
When positioning the decomposition vessel behind the guard, make sure that
no one can be injured by flying debris if a decomposition vessel bursts.
The ignition head (see Section 4.3 "Ignition Head") is placed on the decomposition
vessel and locked by turning it anti-clockwise. This makes the electrical connection
to the remote ignition unit.
Then position the decomposition vessel behind the guard you are going to use.
6.6 Decomposition
Before initiating decomposition at the remote ignition unit, during decomposi-
tion, and right through to the end of the cooling phase, make sure that all per-
sons (including all their limbs) are within the area protected by the guard.
Maintain a safety distance of 2 m to the guard.
For removal and transfer of the decomposition vessel to a water bath, use the
carrying grip included in the scope of supply. Direct contact with the decom-
position vessel after a test can cause burns.
To ignite a sample, press the red button (see illustration in Section 4.1 "Remote Ig-
nition Unit") on the remote ignition unit once. A warning signal sounds.
Following remote ignition, wait at least one minute before removing the decomposi-
tion vessel again. The combustion process will heat up the decomposition vessel. At
the end of the waiting period, lock the carrying grip on to the lid of the decomposition
vessel by turning it anti-clockwise. You can now use the carrying grip to transfer the
decomposition vessel to a water bath. For cooling and quantitative transfer of the
